SHAWNEE — Kansas High School defensive back Scrappy Glass said having eight interceptions his senior year wasn’t enough.
He said he’d been a “ball hawk” all season, so he made it to double digits Friday night. His ninth came in the state’s North/South game, for which he won MVP, and two came in the Oklahoma Coaches Association All-State game, bringing his interception total to 11. It was Glass’ interceptions that helped lead the East to a 14-6 victory over the West at Oklahoma Baptist University’s Crain Family Stadium.
“I was like, ‘I’ve got to get double digits,’” Glass said. “So I got one first half, one second half.”
Glass, who’s Northeastern State University-bound for football, got two of the East’s three interceptions — Kiefer graduate and Southern Nazarene University signee Jaxon Worley got the third — and the offense did just enough to bring home the victory.

The East’s two touchdowns came in the second quarter, and the West was held off the board until El Reno running back, now Southeastern Oklahoma State University player Malachi Nicholson, scampered into the end zone for six. After empty possessions from both sides, the West had two chances from the East’s 37-yard line on third and fourth-and-four. A Hail Mary attempt to the end zone was batted down on third and a short completion that appeared to be the beginning of a lateral back-and-forth-to-the-end zone situation was downed as the clock hit triple zeros.
The East only had 114 passing yards and totaled minus-1 rushing yards, but winning the turnover battle and making stout, timely defensive stops was the difference in the East side of Oklahoma earning bragging rights until next summer.
Here are three takeaways from the All-State football game:
1. Sapulpa’s Marco Smith didn’t rack up yards, but he found the end zone
Smith, a 5-foot-8 running back who is a Northeastern State signee, averaged 0.53 yards per carry in the game. However, in a 14-6 finish, the 10 carries for 19 yards didn’t matter — the 2-yard rush into the end zone did.
After all, the quarterback who handed Smith the ball, the offensive line that blocked for him and his other teammates who celebrated with him all met Wednesday. In a two-day span, they went from strangers to teammates.
“Super glad I got to participate,” Smith said. “Just to build a bond with knowing people for two days, it’s just a different type of experience.”
Smith and Glass were two of six future NSU players who played in the All-State game, the running back said. Smith called out his school’s town, Tahlequah, when bragging about his college teammates’ attendance at the game.
“The Quah!”
2. Jakyran Whitfield’s big-play capability maybe a sign of what’s to come for the wideout
Whitfield, a Fort Hays State University signee from Broken Bow, had the largest offensive play on either side of the ball Friday night. A 45-yard touchdown grab from Luke Milligan, another soon-to-be NSU player and former Lincoln Christian product (who we’ll get to shortly), off a clean post route showcased his athleticism and good hands over the defending West player.
Whitfield only caught three balls Friday night for 52 yards, but his shiftiness and open-field ability were evident, even if no play matched his 45-yard score.
3. Luke Milligan looked the smoothest out of the five quarterbacks who took the field
Two quarterbacks played for the East, three played for the West. Maybe it’s Milligan’s 6-2, 190-pound frame that makes him look the cleanest, but it’s really his effortless-looking release.
Milligan finished 6-for-9 with 71 yards on the night. His poise, arm talent and smooth operation of the East’s offense showed him as the best man under center in the game.
EAST 14, WEST 6
East 0 14 0 0 — 14
West 0 0 0 6 — 6
E: Smith 2 run (Milligan kick)
E: Whitfield 45 pass from Milligan (Milligan kick)
W: Nicholson 9 run (kick failed)
